Preliminary issues/process

Statement of what im setting out to do -

Using liquid emulsion + traditional darkroom methods I am going to print photographic images on 1/16" thick canadian maple veneer. Once the image is hardened and set I am then going to glue together 7 plys of the maple veneer and put it in a specificly designed skateboard press to press the wooden veneers into the concave nature of a skate deck. then it will be machined in all the necessary ways to produce skatedecks.

Initial process -

1. prepare/size the surface (1 sheet of veneer, 1/16" thick) with a gelatin sizing to seal the wood and allow a surface for the liquid emulsion to sit on. The whole 360 degrees of the base veneer needs to be sized as it will be fully submerged under water.

2. after doing many tests on the best way to apply the liquid emulsion, coat the face of the veneer where the image will be.

3. expose image
- either enlarge straight from a negative,
- or acetate negatives + contact print. Allows the image to be digitally altered before exposing.

4. seal the image with a clear lacquer so the image does not get damaged in the construction process. n.b. is not the final seal so does not need to be a thick coat as it is prior to the board being shaped.

5. Sand the reverse side of the veneer to remove the lacquer and make for a much better surface for the glue to stick too.

6. GLUE. glue the 7 layers together in correct order. the glue coat must be very consistant and smoth + applied quickly.
